Cinemaworks has successfully designed a dedicated cinema within a newly completed four-storey family home, showcasing a synergy of AV technology, lighting, interior design, and architecture to create an immersive cinematic experience.
The homeowners initially ordered a dedicated cinema with little prior knowledge of what a professional setup could provide. Owen Maddock, owner and designer at Cinemaworks, invited them to the Bristol demonstration room to illustrate the potential of a well-designed cinema, significantly impacting their understanding of AV quality, acoustics, and lighting.
Upon experiencing the designed space, the homeowners appreciated what was achievable and set high performance standards for their own cinema. They wanted technology integrated into the room’s design, allowing it to function as a family space before transforming into a fully immersive cinematic environment.
Design Evolution and Performance
While the original cinema size was based on Cinemaworks' demo room, changes during construction led to a larger space accommodating eight comfortably. This change necessitated a reevaluation of the audio-visual setup to match the performance experienced previously.
The final system features Ascendo loudspeakers, StormAudio processing, Emotiva amplification, and a high-output JVC projector adapted for the larger screen. Interior design, led by Chi-Chi Baber of Lomax and Chi, ensured the technology remained discreet while the room retained a unique architectural ambiance.
Fabric panels were chosen for the walls and ceiling, growing larger towards the screen to enhance depth. A selected deep-red Camira fabric offers warmth by day and minimizes distractions in low light.
Integrated Lighting
Lighting design was considered from the start to enhance the cinema experience. The implementation includes feature wall lighting, LED strips, downlights, and discreet entrance lighting to create varied atmospheres for socializing or viewing.
Custom-engraved Rako Modular keypads allow for clear control of different functions, which was crucial for the busy family home where not every visit to the room necessitates activating the entire system. Additionally, the Rako lighting is integrated with Savant's home control system, ensuring versatility and ease of use.
Adapting to Changes
Flexibility during construction proved valuable for the lighting installation. Initially, four dimmed circuits were planned for the cinema. As design needs evolved, another circuit was incorporated for a low-level light above the entrance, permitting safe use by the family’s children.
To avoid major disruptions, the team combined wired and wireless controls. A wired feed was converted to support additional wireless dimmers, allowing for necessary adaptations without significant project delays.
Collaborative Efforts
The completion of the cinema required strong collaboration among various professionals. Acoustic treatments influenced the interior design, and the lighting evolved concurrently with the overall architectural direction. The integration of technology was handled with care to ensure a cohesive final product.
Owen Maddock expressed pride in the project, highlighting the collaborative spirit that brought the concept to fruition. It has been acknowledged as a finalist in the 2026 CEDIA EMEA Awards, honoring the seamless integration of performance, technology, and design.
The project ultimately exemplifies the importance of treating a cinema as a part of the home’s architecture, with all elements working together to enhance the overall experience.
