A couple seeking the right apartment in Manhattan's West Village encountered a challenging market. Frustrated by the available options, which ranged from outdated layouts to overly modern designs, they ultimately chose a two-bedroom brownstone in an older building, despite its awkward features and dated bathrooms. The couple decided to move forward with this space and enlisted interior designer Louise Copeland to help transform it.
The 1,000-square-foot apartment has its advantages, including two full bathrooms, two original fireplaces, and abundant natural light. The couple, who split their time between New York City and the Hudson Valley, preferred a manageable size, and they quickly made an offer once they envisioned its potential.
In the kitchen, a previously bland vanilla color scheme was replaced with deep teal cabinets, a marble backsplash, and elegant hardware. Louise made significant changes that enhanced the functionality and beauty of the space, incorporating the couple's preference for color without compromising style.
To ensure the apartment reflected the eclectic spirit of West Village, Louise created a cozy yet modern environment using varied textures and designs. Her efforts extended to the dining alcove, which features an upholstered banquette and a vintage chandelier, showcasing character through artwork and thoughtful decoration.
Louise took care to ensure no surface felt unfinished. The design included wallpapered ceilings, mirrored cabinetry, and rich fabrics, creating a layered and inviting atmosphere. A notably enhanced spare room functions as a combination mudroom, laundry area, and guest suite, cleverly hiding a washer and dryer behind custom cabinetry. This multifunctional room displays the couple’s need for style without sacrificing practicality.
In the primary bedroom, a custom canopy bed designed by Louise stands out, enveloped in cozy wallpaper. The room’s soothing aesthetics contribute to its sanctuary-like feeling. Likewise, the primary bathroom features dark blue tiles and polished brass accents, creating an environment reminiscent of the deep sea.
Despite differing design preferences—him leaning towards modern and her towards traditional—the couple found balance in their shared spaces. The apartment now serves as a calming retreat amid the bustling city life, and they are so pleased with the result that they plan to work with Louise on their Hudson Valley home as well.
