Plants can experience stress when repotted, particularly if their roots are placed in new soil. After repotting my houseplants in February, I utilized Repot Recovery in the water both before and after the process. This method helped them bounce back, making them stronger this spring despite potential root shock.
Repotting often leads to a messy situation, particularly in the kitchen. To manage the clutter, a friend gifted me a repotting mat that easily snaps shut or rolls out. It provides ample space for detangling roots, mixing new potting soil, and contains debris within its four-inch high walls, allowing for easy cleanup afterward.
I usually prefer terracotta pots due to their affordability, often purchasing them at Walmart for spontaneous plant buys. However, for plants that require moisture retention, I chose a Bergs Potter pot. It features drainage to prevent root rot while maintaining an attractive display, and its tapered design allows it to sit nicely above a draining tray.
On a trip to Honolulu in August, I brought back a Hawaiian orchid, which has surprisingly thrived in New Jersey. This success can be attributed to a fast-releasing concentrate fertilizer that nourishes the roots as they adjust to a less humid environment, keeping the plant vibrant throughout autumn and winter.
I enjoy climbing plants, and my monstera adansonii was growing rapidly. To support its growth, I opted for stackable coco coir poles, which can be added progressively. These poles are flexible, allowing the plant to bend naturally, and I use felt-sided tape to avoid damaging the stems.
Fungus gnats present a common challenge for indoor gardeners. These pests thrive in wet soil and decaying plant matter, making prompt action necessary. Using compostable sticky traps inside the pots helps, while additional measures like watering with mosquito bits and employing UV light traps can further address infestations.
A hydroponic system has enabled me to grow fresh herbs at home, countering rising grocery prices. Over the past year, I've successfully cultivated green onions, lavender, peppermint, cilantro, and basil, enhancing my cooking and enabling homemade aromatherapy oils.
The placement of my plants is crucial for their health.
I repurposed a bar cart as a Plant Cart, providing storage for my favorite plants on top and tools below. This cart not only maximizes sunlight exposure but is also mobile, facilitating easy watering.
To maintain my plant's health and shine, I follow a cleaning routine using a popular “sexy plant juice” spray and microfiber gloves. I recently adopted a device that allows me to clean both sides of the leaves simultaneously, keeping my hands dry while ensuring thorough cleaning.
Lastly, for those looking to expand their garden through propagation, I recommend using a growth enzyme in your water cuttings. This quickens the process, strengthening root systems for easier transition to soil.
