For years, my living room remained bare and uninviting, prompting questions like, "Did you just move in?" Despite my interest in interior design, I struggled with the layout due to a tricky entrance that obstructed the space. After five years of inaction, I enlisted the help of a designer to finally create a warm and functional living room that feels larger and welcoming for guests.

Layout Challenges

The main issue with my living room was the front door, which swings inward, creating an obstruction for rugs and furniture near the entrance. This layout issue was exacerbated by an open-concept design that left little wall space for arranging furniture. To address this, I turned to Havenly, an online platform that connects users with designers based on personal style preferences.

Collaboration with a Designer

I connected with Stefanny Osorio, an interior architect from Boston. Upon reviewing my space, she noted that the large L-shaped couch I had chosen overwhelmed the room and made it feel cramped. We decided to remove the sectional and started framing the space with a new rug that helped define the area without blocking the entrance.

Osorio suggested using a smaller, machine-washable rug from Tumble to soften the space. For seating, we opted for two white slipcovered sofas from IKEA, which created a lighter and more inviting atmosphere while taking full advantage of the room's narrow layout.

Cozy Touches and Finishing Details

To enhance comfort, I added throw pillow inserts and decorative covers. Inspired by cozy movie interiors, I incorporated lamps from HomeGoods to add warmth and brightness. A previously built modern entertainment center posed a challenge in achieving the desired cozy aesthetic, but Osorio proposed using a warmer paint color and traditional wainscoting to bridge the gap.

My husband and I executed the wainscoting project together, selecting moldings and a warm paint color to unify the design. A rounded ottoman replaced the bulky coffee table to facilitate traffic flow while providing storage space for toys, making it practical for our family.

Lessons Learned

Through this transformation, I learned how easily one can grow complacent with home decor. I had become too comfortable with the old setup, fearing change due to the risk of the kids damaging new items. However, even my children adapted well to the new arrangement, enjoying a cozier living environment and a family-centric atmosphere. We now prioritize mealtime at the dining table instead of in front of the TV, fostering closeness and relaxation.

This redesign has helped us step into a more inviting space, reminiscent of my favorite film interiors.
