Designing small living spaces poses a unique challenge for architects and interior designers. However, several professionals have successfully created innovative small living room concepts that marry practicality with aesthetics. Here are some standout ideas highlighted by Architectural Digest (AD).
Cohesive Color Palette
Satish Ray, a social media personality known for TVF's "Panchayat Season 2," and his fiancée, a product designer, sought to embody their roots in their 770-square-foot home in Versova. They collaborated with designer Nimish Salekar from The Cooter Shell to create a space that blends the rustic charm of Bihar with Himachal Pradesh's intricate wooden elements. The living room features a warm color palette of deep greens and wooden furniture, enhancing the home's depth and character.
Creating a Speakeasy
In a Colaba residence named Stil House, the designer Agavi Vora aimed for intentionality in every aspect of the 850-square-foot space. Tailored for a young bachelor planning a family, the home accommodates both current and future needs. The dining area showcases an elegant oak table with a granite top and a discreet bar, seamlessly integrating practical living without compromising on style.
Decorating with Memories
Artist Gaurav Ogale transitioned from Bombay back to his hometown, moving into an intimate 800-square-foot rental filled with sunlight. He curates his space with personal artifacts, integrating art and memory into his daily life. Each item in his home carries significance, allowing him to create storytelling elements within his living space, emphasizing that none were mindlessly acquired.
Multi-Functional Furniture
Catering to the space optimization needs of Bollywood editor Zubin Sheikh, designers focused on functionality without sacrificing aesthetic appeal in his Virar home. The dining area easily transforms into an extended living room with a clever folding table design, maximizing space while serving as a visual centerpiece.
Window Seating
In an 800-square-foot apartment in Prabhadevi, architect Rochelle Santimano enhanced the living area by adding a seating ledge to a bay window. This not only creates a serene nook but also increases seating capacity for entertaining guests, demonstrating that maximizing function can be creatively achieved.
Embracing Curves
The design for a 1,100-square-foot home in Pune focused on safety, simplicity, and softness to suit a couple welcoming their first child. Designers Prathamesh Kubal and Tanvi Dubbewar provided ample built-in storage crafted in light oak, maintaining a sense of openness. Curved furniture edges and rounded wall corners further contribute to the thoughtful storage solutions without cluttering the space.
Stylish Demarcations
An 880-square-foot apartment in Mumbai, perched on the 12th floor, features a natural wine-brown Mandana stone deck that neatly distinguishes the living and dining areas. Designed by Kushal and Sanyukta, the layout utilizes creative detailing and organic forms, allowing natural light to play throughout the home and creating a tranquil ambiance.
