A family of four in Manhattan's Washington Heights has redefined how a one-bedroom apartment can function, demonstrating creativity in a compact space. Nic and Khrystyne Jaspers purchased their 700-square-foot home in June 2020, anticipating the arrival of their second child. Opting for the apartment's layout and natural light over a two-bedroom unit, they faced the challenge of accommodating four people within a single bedroom.

To optimize sleeping arrangements, they decided to let their children, Zeke and Taliyah, have the bedroom. This choice provided a quiet space for the kids to sleep without disturbing the parents. They outfitted the kids' room with IKEA MYDAL bunk beds and KALLAX storage, making the most of the available area. The room features a corner window, allowing abundant natural light that the family cherishes, particularly Khrystyne, who noted that the children enjoy lying on the floor to gaze at the moon and sun.

To solve their own sleeping needs, the couple installed a Murphy bed in the living room, which can easily convert the space from a living area into their bedroom. Khrystyne expressed their satisfaction with the Murphy bed, stating that it not only maximizes space but also allows for fluid transitions between a family gathering space and a private sleeping area.

This innovative approach to small living exemplifies that there are no strict rules when it comes to maximizing space in a home. Instead of defaulting to a traditional layout or seeking additional square footage, the Jaspers family engineered their living environment around their unique needs, proving that successful small-space living is achievable without compromising on comfort or style.
