Decorating a home effectively involves not just finding the right piece of art, but also placing it correctly. Many people struggle with how to hang artwork, as the placement can significantly affect the overall feel of a room. Common mistakes include hanging art too high, too low, or off-center. According to Megan Daisy Milner, an artist and interior stylist, one of the most frequent errors is selecting art that is too small for the space.
Megan argues that the belief that large pieces of art will make a room look smaller is a misconception. Instead, she asserts that oversized artwork can actually create an illusion of a larger space. In a recent Instagram Reel, she stated, "The key to making your house feel taller when you have eight-foot ceilings is hanging giant art." This approach can positively influence how spacious a room feels.
For example, in her narrow hallway with low ceilings, Megan displays a five-foot-tall original painting that visually enhances the area. The combination of the artwork's size and bright colors makes the hallway appear more grand than cramped. "Not only does it make an impact, it just makes the entire space feel larger," she noted.
Megan’s advice extends to hanging artwork above furniture, specifically above sofas, which can often present a styling challenge. Instead of opting for a gallery wall, she recommends placing a single large piece or a tapestry for a more impactful effect. She suggests a minimum size of 48 inches wide for art displayed over sofas, regardless of ceiling height. This not only balances the room but also contributes to a feeling of greater spaciousness. Large statement pieces can transform a small area and provide a grander atmosphere.
