Rosaline Elbay faced a challenging layout when decorating her living room in New York City, complicated by the positioning of a bathroom door that restricted her use of space. After experimenting with about a dozen furniture arrangements, she had a breakthrough idea at 3 a.m. that involved a diagonal setup, which not only solved her layout issues but also added character to the room.
To enhance the aesthetic, Rosaline created a gallery wall above the fireplace featuring a variety of artwork. She emphasized the importance of trial and error in achieving the right look, utilizing Command strips for easy adjustments. Her approach included mixing sculptures with paintings and prints, varying the sizes and textures while also experimenting with different colored frames to maintain harmony within the space.
Rosaline's DIY projects also contributed to the room's charm, particularly her custom sofa tables made from repurposed black TV tray tables. She decorated the tabletops with mother-of-pearl mosaic, a technique she wanted to try for a while, resulting in a unique and personal touch. Overall, her creative solutions and thoughtful design choices transformed the living room into a cozy escape from the bustling city.
